How to Properly Test Wi-Fi Speed: Step-by-Step Guide

Main Mistake

"My plan is 200 Mbps, Speedtest 30. ISP scams!"

99% — test was wrong, not ISP.

Understand First

  • ISP plan = speed to ISP server. 200 Mbps to Tas-IX backbone. EU/US may be 50/0 — not ISP fault.
  • Wi-Fi ≠ internet. ISP 200 → LAN 1 Gbps → Wi-Fi 6 5m: 400-700 → 2.4 GHz wall: 50-150.
  • Device-dependent. Old laptop = 100-150 max even on top router.
  • Proper Method

    Test 1: ISP speed (bypass Wi-Fi). Ethernet direct to router → Speedtest 3x average. <80% = call ISP. Test 2: Wi-Fi at points. Wi-Fi 6 device, 1m baseline, then bedroom/kitchen/far/bathroom. <30% baseline = problem. Test 3: Multi-device load. 5 devices Speedtest simultaneously. Sum ≈ plan = good. 2-3× less = router bottleneck.

    Tools

  • Speedtest.net — standard
  • Nperf.com — EU
  • Fast.com — Netflix streaming
  • iperf3 — pure LAN/Wi-Fi for techies
  • iperf3

  • Server: `iperf3 -s`
  • Client: `iperf3 -c 192.168.1.10 -t 30`
  • Speedtest hits ISP, iperf3 shows pure Wi-Fi ceiling.

    Slow Causes

  • Old device chip
  • Stuck on 2.4 GHz
  • Crowded evening channel
  • Antivirus HTTPS
  • VPN
  • Defender SmartScreen
  • Complain to ISP When

    ✓ Ethernet test <80%

    ✓ Constant

    ✓ Reboot done

    ✓ No CRC errors

    ✗ Wi-Fi slower than ethernet

    ✗ Peak slowdown

    ✗ EU slower (peering)

    ✗ VPN slower

    Bottom Line

90% "slow internet" = old Wi-Fi standard, far testing, old device, 2.4 GHz.
